HarperCollins CEO Brian Murray told the magazine that while 99% of its revenue comes from English-language markets, 40% of Harlequin’s revenue comes from foreign-language titles. According to The New Yorker, it is this powerful international presence that attracted News Corp. There is still one bright spot though: Harlequin shows great strength outside of North America, publishing more than 1,300 authors, with more than 100 titles a month in 34 languages, with offices in 16 countries. Raphel adds that while Harlequins can get “racy,” they still “retain something of their genteel British roots.” In fact, on its website, it’s clear that while the Harlequin Blaze series is its “sexiest” imprint, it’s not “erotica.” (“While our books are very sensual, they deliver on the Harlequin promise of one hero, one heroine, and an implied committed relationship at the end.) Even so, Harlequin has tried to change with the times – several months after James’s books hit the best-seller lists, Harlequin, for the first time, released some B.D.S.M. And, as Raphel notes, some of those titles were racier than traditional Harlequin offerings. Three years later, Raphel writes, romance novels were the fastest-growing part of the ebook market, in no small part because, as Julie Bosman wrote in the Times, readers could trade “the racy covers of romance novels for the discretion of digital books.”īut while the Kindle and other e-readers added a new level of popularity to Harlequin Romances, it also made it easier for writers to self-publish their novels, and for smaller romance publishers to get their titles noticed. In 1972, Harlequin acquired Mills & Boon, and soon was synonymous with the romance novel. Yes, it does a great job with building up the events that will happen from volume 3 on, as well as setting up the characters, introducing their personalities and giving a bit of exposition, but what made me not want to put it down at the time was just how much I kept getting impressed with… well, almost with every page. ![]() ![]() While those thoughts perished from volume 3 on (as the main selling point of the novel is completely different), it was what kept me reading the first two volumes, and it’s the reason why I never even thought of dropping it at any point. Granted, at that point I thought that HakoMari’s main selling point was its ability to thrill its readers and constantly keep them guessing about what’s happening. Right from the start I thought that it had a lot of potential to be an incredible mystery series, because it managed to thrill me so much in the first 100 pages, in a similar fashion to how Death Note’s first episodes impressed me so much in that same regard. Why? Because it starts off with a really good volume that serves not only as build-up for future volumes, but also manages to be incredibly good as a standalone. Now HakoMari does one thing really well from the very start: it’s very easy to get hooked to the story. I’ll proceed to explain why I find this novel to be amazing, as well as the change in my thoughts regarding the main selling point of the novel, then discussing the main characters a bit and wrapping it up with and an overall impression of the work. Now, I most certainly did NOT expect it to become my new favorite work of fiction, nor did I expect it to impress me in so many different ways. I actually was meant to have read it much earlier on, but unfortunately due to my problems with reading fiction without any audio or visual support I only gathered the motivation to start it recently.
